Kevin has often told Jason, "Thank you for saving my career!", and has also stated that without PT Northwest and Jason Ball, he probably wouldn't have been able to return to football.

Another PT Northwest Patient Success Story: "They're keeping me alive"

on Ed

It is 5:15 am on Monday morning. Clinic Director Mike Hmura, MSPT, pulls into the parking lot of the Northbank clinic in North East Salem and Ed Dorn is already waiting for him. Mike finishes opening the clinic and sits down. Ed sits beside him in their ritual that started nearly nine years ago when Ed was first a patient at the clinic. Every morning they sit together, sip coffee, and exchange stories; this is, however, only after Ed has gone into the gym and participated in PT Northwest’s Wellness Program. The program encourages individuals to lead healthy, active lifestyles through independent gym and pool use; patients are initially guided by a physical therapist on technique and then encouraged to participate independently, in classes taught by PT Northwest staff, or through symposiums offered quarterly on a variety of wellness topics such as Fall Prevention, Low Back Care, and the Basics of Exercise. Just as the wellness program has become a staple in Ed’s life, Ed has become a staple in the PT Northwest family. “They’re keeping me alive” he states, with his benevolent grin.

A WWII Navy Seabee from Philadelphia, Ed moved to Salem nearly 40 years ago. The three-time cancer survivor will celebrate his 84th birthday this December. He loves gardening outside and treasures the dog that Mike helped him get when his wife passed away. While Ed claims he doesn’t like the PT Northwest staff too much, his ritualistic attendance spanning nearly a decade proves that to be a falsity.

When Ed began his career with PT Northwest, he was he was a diabetic, borderline insulin dependent, and suffering from arthritis. Because land-based therapy was too difficult, Ed started as a pool patient in the independent program. With Ed’s diligence and the help of the Wellness Program, he progressed to land-based therapy in the gym doing both cardio and weight training exercises.  To Mike’s amazement, the signs of arthritis have decreased in Ed’s imaging reports. Through adjusting his diet and exercising regularly, Ed is no longer worried about becoming dependent on insulin. His cardiovascular fitness has increased, as well as his ability to perform weight-bearing exercises. It is the mission of PT Northwest to empower individuals; through the promotion of healthy lifestyles, our hope is to increasing fitness, wellness, and independence from medications. Ed exemplifies how an individual’s quality of life can improve with a daily change, and how PT Northwest can help people reach their wellness goals.

PT Northwest is a recognized leader in physical rehabilitation, and has served Oregon's Willamette Valley since 1977.  For more information about PT Northwest call (503) 371-8860 to speak with a representative.
