on Ed

It is 5:15 am on Monday morning. Clinic Director Mike Hmura, MSPT, pulls into the parking lot of the Northbank clinic in North East Salem and Ed Dorn is already waiting for him. Mike finishes opening the clinic and sits down. Ed sits beside him in their ritual that started nearly nine years ago when Ed was first a patient at the clinic. Every morning they sit together, sip coffee, and exchange stories; this is, however, only after Ed has gone into the gym and participated in PT Northwest’s Wellness Program. The program encourages individuals to lead healthy, active lifestyles through independent gym and pool use; patients are initially guided by a physical therapist on technique and then encouraged to participate independently, in classes taught by PT Northwest staff, or through symposiums offered quarterly on a variety of wellness topics such as Fall Prevention, Low Back Care, and the Basics of Exercise. Just as the wellness program has become a staple in Ed’s life, Ed has become a staple in the PT Northwest family. “They’re keeping me alive” he states, with his benevolent grin.

A WWII Navy Seabee from Philadelphia, Ed moved to Salem nearly 40 years ago. The three-time cancer survivor will celebrate his 84th birthday this December. He loves gardening outside and treasures the dog that Mike helped him get when his wife passed away. While Ed claims he doesn’t like the PT Northwest staff too much, his ritualistic attendance spanning nearly a decade proves that to be a falsity.

When Ed began his career with PT Northwest, he was he was a diabetic, borderline insulin dependent, and suffering from arthritis. Because land-based therapy was too difficult, Ed started as a pool patient in the independent program. With Ed’s diligence and the help of the Wellness Program, he progressed to land-based therapy in the gym doing both cardio and weight training exercises.  To Mike’s amazement, the signs of arthritis have decreased in Ed’s imaging reports. Through adjusting his diet and exercising regularly, Ed is no longer worried about becoming dependent on insulin. His cardiovascular fitness has increased, as well as his ability to perform weight-bearing exercises. It is the mission of PT Northwest to empower individuals; through the promotion of healthy lifestyles, our hope is to increasing fitness, wellness, and independence from medications. Ed exemplifies how an individual’s quality of life can improve with a daily change, and how PT Northwest can help people reach their wellness goals.

A PT Northwest Patient Success Story: "Regaining Body and Mind"

on Kate

Once an avid dancer, swimmer, figure skater, cycler, and gardener, Kate Redford lost her active lifestyle as she entered into middle age. At 58, Kate was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) along with the Rheumatoid Arthritis Crippling factor. It was 1990, and the treatment available simply included mega doses of aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs, plus large doses of Prednisone. After working 50 hours per week, she would go home and look in the mirror, wondering if she was losing her mind. Kate could not hold a single sheet paper in her hands without significant pain, and her feet were in poor shape as well.

Nine years later, Kate was placed under the care of a Rheumatologist. By 2005, the disease had escalated, requiring her to use a walker or a cane for ambulation. Self-described as clumsy and awkward, her previously active lifestyle was unimaginable. As she departed her 60’s, Kate had very little flexibility or stability. Her work with a personal trainer had been unsuccessful in increasing her strength and balance.  Thus, Kate’s doctor urged her to move to a scooter and a walker full time.  She pleaded for a chance to work with a physical therapist to regain what she had lost.

Kate and her doctor chose PT Northwest. As a patient at both Northeast Salem and Keizer, Kate’s balance improved and her legs and arms became stronger.

Since her initial therapy visit, Kate has been seen at PT Northwest Keizer for four different cases for various parts of her body associated with her RA, “depending on which part of my body was screaming,” she stated.  Her most recent visit, last summer, was related to neck and shoulder pain, estimated to be an eight out of ten on a pain scale. Through exercise during her sessions, Kate’s whole attitude began to change.  While the pain continued, she was able to focus her energy on other activities instead of her agony and decrease her pain medication.

Today she is able to drive, work in her garden, and be more involved with her household activities, with few ill aftereffects. Kate is also limiting the use of her cane, which she describes as “WONDERFUL.”  Presently, 78 years old and working 25 hours per week, Kate is able to enjoy many extracurricular activities. She found her key to an active lifestyle included physical therapy with an emphasis on a home exercise program. In June, Kate is expecting to undergo a right total knee replacement and is working with Lisa and the PT Northwest staff in Keizer to meet her pre-surgery goals. She is determined to increase her overall fitness and strength pre and post-surgery. Kate attributes a large part of her success and progress to the PT Northwest staff whose knowledge, dedication, and compassion gave her a sense of physical confidence of which she had never experienced.

on Insider Pages

I was skepitcal when my doctor asked me to try physical therapy again and was pleasantly suprised to get relief of my low back pain after working with Matt at PT Northwest. Instead of just having me do loads of exercises he helped me isolate my problem and provided me with just a couple of exercises to do throughout the day. He spent a lot of time talking with me about what kinds of things I do during the day that affect my problem and how to avoid/or better adapt those situation. Highly recommended. The staff is very friendly and they make you feel at home. I hope I don't need therapy again, but if I do I know where to go.

Pros: knowledegeable, compassionate, friendly

Cons: sometimes crowded
